When a 9-year-old boy ran away from home and into the wilderness, authorities knew that it was a race against the clock to find him alive.
According to WJW Cleveland, the child’s mother frantically called 911, saying that her son heard her get out of bed and that’s when he ran out the door and into the darkness. In the freezing temperatures, there was little chance he would survive long even if he was bundled up.
Tuscarawas County Sheriff Orvis Campbell and his team scoured the area and hills around the house looking for him, and as temperatures started to fall, they used whatever was at their disposal to find him, including police dogs and a thermal-sensing camera that would detect heat signatures. All they found was a few animals in the woods, but nothing more.
They found the boy’s footprints, but unfortunately, those ended up going to a driveway and onto a road where they lost track of him.
After a few hours of fruitless searching, the sheriff asked for an Ohio Highway Patrol helicopter also equipped with a thermal imaging camera to help in the efforts. An hour later, the boy was found on the top of a hill across from his family’s home. He was cold and wet, sleeping in the snow, and he would not have lived for much longer had authorities not found him when they did.
While there is no word about why the child ran away from home, he and his family are just relieved that this dangerous situation has a happy ending!
Please SHARE if you’re glad this child is back home and safe where he belongs!
